The Train Trap:
Here's what Mountains to Plains Transit Authority proposes for a train
system:
- The tracks start on the west side of Denver -- not to DIA, and not to
the east, north or south metro areas, or Boulder.
- The tracks end at Vail, with nothing for Winter Park or Eldora.
- Their train would require an elevated railway running along I-70
(causing terrible traffic delays during construction).
- There would be 12-14 stations along the way (with each stop adding to a
longer trip time).
Things their website does not explain:
- The price for design, construction, or maintenance of their proposal --
they won't even make an estimate!
- The amount of electricity required to operate the train, or the price
for that power.
- The projected ridership, how many trains would run during peak times, or
how long a trip might take.
- A timetable for how long their proposal would take to design and build.
- What a round-trip ticket might cost.
Here are a few questions you should ask them:
- Would summer hikers want to use a train that doesn't go near any popular
trailheads or fourteeners?
- Will summer and fall campers really use a train that doesn't go near any
campgrounds?
- How will campers carry tents, sleeping bags, coolers, and a stove and
firewood onto a train?
- Who is going to use the train between the ski seasons and camping
seasons?
- How many mountain residents are projected to ride a train down into
Denver?
Now go back and take another look at my proposal which lists full
costs, timetables, and a definite result.
Whose plan makes more sense to you?
